What to Bring to Your Paediatric Specialist Appointment

A current referral letter

A referral from a GP is usually required to see a paediatrician. This ensures appropriate specialist care, allows Medicare rebates, and helps coordinate your child’s healthcare. Without a referral, you may have to pay the full cost and risk delays in accessing the most suitable services for your child.

Relevant test results, reports, or imaging

Bringing relevant test results, reports, or imaging to your paediatrician appointment ensures accurate diagnosis, continuity of care, and avoids unnecessary repeat tests. It provides a complete medical history, helps guide treatment decisions, and supports timely and informed care tailored to your child’s specific health needs and circumstances.

Medicare card

A Medicare card is essential when seeing a paediatrician in Australia as it allows access to subsidised healthcare services. With it, you can claim rebates for consultations, reducing out-of-pocket costs. It ensures your child receives necessary medical care under the public healthcare system without paying full fees.

Your child’s Blue Book

Your child’s Blue Book (Personal Health Record) is essential when visiting a paediatrician in Australia. It contains vital information such as growth charts, immunisation records, and developmental milestones. This helps the paediatrician assess your child’s health history, track progress, and provide accurate, personalised care based on previous observations and interventions.
